PM Fiber Components: Extinction Ratio & Alignment
Polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber components are used where signal phase and polarization fidelity are important. The required extinction ratio, alignment tolerance and fiber configuration must be confirmed for the intended system.
Selection Logic & Polarization Physics
1. Modal Birefringence & Extinction Ratio (ER) Definition
Polarization-maintaining fibers—most commonly Panda or Bow-Tie geometry—induce high internal birefringence (B = n_slow - n_fast ~ 3–5 × 10⁻⁴) via asymmetric thermal stress rods. This separates the slow and fast propagation constants, suppressing cross-coupling between orthogonal polarization states.
PER (dB) = 10 × log10(P_slow / P_fast)A PER of 20 dB represents 99.0% power in the intended slow axis; a PER of 25 dB represents 99.7% power purity.
Beat length L_b = λ / B is typically 2.0 mm to 4.0 mm at 1550nm. Components must maintain stress rod orientation throughout the internal optical train without inducing mechanical micro-bends.
2. Angular Alignment Error & Extinction Ratio Degradation
When connecting or splicing two PM fibers, any rotational angular misalignment θ between the slow axes directly degrades the output extinction ratio:
PER_effective ≈ -10 × log10[ tan^2(θ) + 10^(-PER_input / 10) ]Connector key orientation and permissible angular error must be defined at the system interface and confirmed against the selected product specification.
3. Slow Axis Working vs. Fast Axis Blocked
PM component review includes axis behavior:
- Both Axes Working: Light transmitted on either the slow or fast axis passes through the component with low insertion loss, maintaining its input state. Used in PM couplers (031, 103) and PM DWDM (027).
- Slow Axis Working, Fast Axis Blocked: The component incorporates an internal polarizer that actively absorbs or deflects any light on the fast axis. This provides polarization cleanup, ensuring that any cross-coupled light from prior splices is stripped before reaching the next amplifier stage. Standard on KernsOptic PM isolators (007, 049, 118).

Frequently Asked Engineering Questions (FAQ)
Can I splice Panda PM fiber to Bow-Tie PM fiber?
PM fiber compatibility, axis alignment and the acceptance method must be confirmed for the selected configuration. Review the required PER at the system interface with engineering.
Why does extinction ratio drop when connectors are added to a PM component?
Connectors can affect polarization performance and loss. Confirm the connector type, key orientation and acceptance criteria for the selected assembly.
What key orientation is standard on KernsOptic PM connectors?
Axis orientation and connector-key convention must be stated in the RFQ and confirmed in the engineering review.
